ScanDisk Alternatives?

    Hi,

When I try degfragmenting any of my partitions, I keep getting the message that I should use ScanDisk to fix the errors before a Defrag. can proceed.

When I use ScanDisk it also behaves funny, sometimes saying it can't and other times saying it restarted many times so cannot proceed.

Are there any other Hard Disk Tools out there of quality which can do a better job than Window's ScanDisk?

    Pls. advise. Thanks,

    m.q.

    Re: ScanDisk Alternatives?

Rather than run Scandisk from within Windows, you can run it at boot, from a DOS prompt. That is usually the best way to run it since ther won't be anything running in the background to interrupt it.

When you start the computer, press F8 when you see the BIOS POST screen (or hammer on it repeatedly if you want ).

Choose Command Prompt Only from the list.

Type in SCANDISK /ALL /AUTOFIX /NOSAVE

Press <enter>[/list]That will run Scandisk and force it to scan all fixed drives, automatically fix errors, and skip prompting for an undo disk.

Try this first and see if you can avoid the need for a third-party tool.

Try to stop first your Taskmanager and after that run Defrag from Windows.
