Endnotes with pagenumbers (Word 2000 SR1)

I am editing/indexing a book using a Master Document. The book was written using Word 2000 and has endnotes. The endnotes no longer have references in the text and the actual endnotes have page numbers rather than sequential numbers. How did this happen and how do I get back to sequential numbers? When I float the cursor over the text the endnote appears but I have to run the cursor all over the page to find my endnotes because the references do not apear.

That's odd! Check the style definition for Endnote Reference and see if it is Hidden text.

(Ducking and running in advance of the barrage of comments on the use of Master Documents.)

Problem is not a problem. It turns out the author intended the endnotes not have reference numbers and be listed by page number. Here is an excerpt from her message to me: "Instead of a sequential number, I inserted a blank symbol in the text as a reference (the spot in the text is still hot); then I put a page reference field in the end note text.
