    Loss of Mapped Drives

Occasionally individuals using Win98SE connected to a Win NT 4.0 server lose their ability to access mapped drives and the application freezes. This happens most often when using MS Excel 97.

You could try turning off power saving and "Wake on LAN" for the NICs (Network Interface Cards) as a starting point.

    Bill
    The clue was Excel:
A classic that I have in my office is users tend to place their (extremely large) excel workbooks and more specifically the accountants on a shared drive and then try to manipulate the data in situ. They have found that the network locks and Excel halts. Some of them stated they needed more RAM but the real issue was that the network just couldn't handle that much data in one go. What I advised, and it seems to work , is to transfer the workbook to their local PC, do the manipulation and then send it back to the drive afterwards.

Since then they have been saying that Excel has sped up and they are finding it easier to archive.
