Home Page Locked (all)

Apparently some Unscrupulous sites have figured a way to lock your Home Page on to their site and wont allow you to change it using Internet O[tions. All buttons are greyed out.

If you have this problem, as I did, the answer is on MS site. Go to their Knowledge Base and search for Q320159. It will get you out of the problem.

Here's a link to that article: Home Page Setting Changes Unexpectedly, or You Cannot Change Your Home Page Setting (Q320159)

Applies to all version of IE 5.x and to IE 6.

..er, yes, that's all well and good, especially if you are not virus protected, and are quite happy to edit your Registry settings manually.
However, a quicker and more effficient way of reversing any unwanted changes to the appearance of IE, is to get XTQ (my site #18 has the latest full version), which is freeware. This not only allows you to re-set your HomePage, it also allows you to add/remove any personalisation of the IE Title Bar. There is also a small freeware app that locks your Homepage, preventing any unauthorised changes to it.

I'm not sure about your suggestion, but I had McAfee Virus shield installed and updated all their virus signatures and it neither prevented nor indicated any virus action.

Only mentioned viruses because the bulk of the MS KB article was about how a change in the Home Page of the sort you describe might be evidence of an infection. If your sure its not that, then the XTQ tweaker is a good way of looking after IE settings. Is all.

Re: Home Page Locked (all)

We had a similar problem. One of the employees here brought in his home system, because a XXX site had "hijacked" his home page and wouldn't give it back .
He was running Win 98 SE, so the utility MSCONFIG (or MSCONFIG32?) allowed us to use the Startup tab to un-check this item.
Everything else we did did not work. We, too, thought it must be a virus.
Until MSCONFIG.
Give it a shot. I don't have a 9x system nearby, so I am unable to give you the exact steps to that feature, but it's Start | Run and put in MSCONFIG, then Enter and find the menu item for Tools.
I believe, in Win ME, that this can be found under the Help System, too.
Sorry I cannot be more precise.

Re: Home Page Locked (all)

I had a similar problem with gohip.com. After it changed my homepage, I would change it back only to lose it again when I would restart my computer. I assumed at first it was a virus only to learn later on that it was spyware.

Check your computer for a file called 'BrowserEnh' under Program files and see if the unwanted file is there.

I also suggest that you download Ad-aware which will search your computer for other spyware and components. You can find it here: http://www.lavasoft.nu/
