Opening non Word files (Word 97)

    Hi,

When I open a text file previously unknown to Word and let Word covert the file to a Word document, it does not seem to use normal.dot as its page layout - default headers and footers etc. To get my headers and footers I have to open a new file and then Insert, File, and select the text file.

Any suggestions on what happens, and can it be changed so I can open a text file in one step and get my normal.dot details?

    Thanks in advance.

Word seems to use its factory-default margins and style in these cases. I'm not aware of any simple workaround, other than the one you are using.

In theory, a macro could take any number of useful actions if you were to intercept the File|Open... dialog and handle the selected file name differently depending on the extension.

    Jefferson,

    Thanks for your reply!

At least I am not getting annoyed about someting for which there is a simple solution!

    Have a great day!
