    Transferring data files Win3.11<->Win98SE(FAT32)

    My old 486 machine running Win3.11 is finally starting to bite the dust. The floppy no longer works and I have foolishly given away the modem before I got my old data files off it. Because there's no floppy I can't install anything new.

    I have tried running the old Laplink DOS executible "ll3.exe" on my partner's Deskpro P200MMX/Win98SE (from DOS) but it can't seem to find the COM ports. Even if I could get "ll3" going on the Pentium I'm still not sure about using its Remote Install because I can't recall what you need to set up on the remote machine for it to accept the install. Something to do with the "MODE" command if I recall.

    Does anyone have any suggestions short of physically pulling the HDD from the 486 and installing it in the Pentium (which won't go down well with its owner <g>).

    Floppy drives are very inexpensive.
    Buy a floppy drive and add it to the system.

    Of cource, floppies don't have much capacity, so copying the files to floppies isn't very cost effective.

    It mighr be best to send the drive to a data recovery service and they can pull the files to media that you can read on another system.

    Have you cleaned the diskette drive by vacuuming the dust out (on old machines a ton of stuff accumulates in there) and running a diskette head cleaner on it? I have a 13 year old working 3
