List Templates (Numbering & Bullets) (Word 97/2000)

My manual template has reached 1940 list templates - meaning I cannot create any further bullets or numbers.
I tried to copy the content of the corrupt manual into a new 'clean' template, but the number of list templates are carried with, even though I formatted the text to 'normal' style.
Any idea how I can remove list templates from a document or any other ideas?
    Urgent help, I am desperate!!!

Thanks, Gary. I hadn't realized before you posted this that one could end up with so many List Templates. Several of my documents were over 500 pages & had well over 1500 List Templates. My documents now open & save faster...& I thought my reflexes has slowed down. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> This is a must for every Lounger with Word 2000.

Edited by HansV to update links that no longer worked

    Lynden,

If you have access to Word 2002, you can simply open your template in Word 2002, and save it - that will remove the excess list templates (removal of excess list templates on document open is a built-in feature starting with Word 2002).

If you have Word 2000 Service Release 1, you can modify the registry to make Word 2000 behave like Word 2002 with regard to removal of list templates.
You can see MS KB Article Q241581 for details on how to make this registry change.

In brief, if you have SR1, the registry modification is as follows (the usual caveats apply to advice to edit the registry: know what you are doing, always make a backup):

Select the following key in the Windows registry:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0WordOpt ions

On the Edit menu, click New , click DWord Value , and then add the following registry value:
    Value Name: LTOverflowRecovery
    Value: 1

If you are using Word 97, you can make a similar registry change (only difference being to use '8.0' rather than '9.0') see MS KB Article Q237274 for more details (thanks to Hans V. for pointing out this article).

    Gary
