    Multiple Table of Contents in one document (Word 2002)

    I am trying to figure out if it is possible to create two (2) different table of contents in one document. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this?

    Thanks.

    I don't have experience with it but I would venture to guess... Sure, why not? <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>
    The TOC is nothing more than a line of code. (e.g., {TOC O "1-4"} inserted, of course, with the CTRL+F9 brackets) I would guess that if you put a second line of TOC code in there, it would do the same thing again.
    I guess a better question would be what are you trying to accomplish with two TOCs?

    I've done it and it is relatively easy to do.

    See Customizing your table of contents with switches for directions on using the /b switch on the TOC field. Take a look at Complex Documents in Microsoft Word (addbalance.com/usersguide/complex_documents.htm) for more on setting up documents for automatic generation of a Table of Contents (or other tables / indices).

    Thanks for the suggestion. I will give it a shot. As far as what I am trying to accomplish. I have a document that already has a table of contents at the beginning. I have a great number of Appendices and Exhibits at the end of the docment. I want to generate a table of contents that covers just the Appendices and Exhibits towards the end of the document just before the actual appendices.

    Hi Ron:
    One other method that you can consider that works without bookmarks. It has the advantage that you can add & delete portions of text without worrying that might delete a bookmark.

    Create the appendix section with a set of different outline numbering style names. You can have one set numbered and another set unnumbered or any other combination.

    The syntax for using custom styles is

    { TOC o "StartNumber-EndNumber" t "StyleName,level,NextStyleName,level" }

    where the braces are inserted by pressing Ctrl+F9. The t switch says to use custom styles. If you aleady have the appendix & exhibits in a certain style, you can easily create a new style for them without changing their appearance. Just select an entire paragraph of an appendix heading or exhibit, click in the style box, type a new name, & press <enter>.

    Hope this helps.
