Why always thumbnail view (WinXP, Publisher XP)

WHenever I click on [ Insert - Picture - File ] in PUblisher XP or Office XP I was presented a file open dialogue in which all pictures are presented in the thumbnail format. Since I have more than several hundred pictures in one folder, the thumbnail view make locating files not that convenient.

Is there a way to change this behavior, i.e. to show the list or detail view instead? I want the XP software to remember this setting permanently, so that I do not need to change the view whenever I insert picture into a document.

    Thanks for any help.

You should be able to change the listing as you would in any other Office programs. see the atachment and sel the icon that looks like a small Windows Explorer pane, and the select lit should pop up.

Re: Why always thumbnail view (WinXP, Publisher XP)

Thank you for your response. But I want to know why it does not allow me to make the Details view as a default view. Everytime I need to change from Thumbnail view to List or Detail View. XP is clever enough to display thumbnail view when you want to insert picture, but that view is not the best when I have hundreds of pictures and I do not need to preview the picture before inserting.
Is there a way to make it a default Detail view or List view when the file open dialogue is opened?

    Thanks for your input anyway.

I do NOT have Publisher installed, so I do not know what options you have. Some programs have a "Check" box that select the Preview mode. This is normally on the Insert file pane, see if there is one and if it is checked clear the checkmark.

Re: Why always thumbnail view (WinXP, Publisher XP)

This phenomenon happens not only to Publisher. Excel and Word XP also show same thumbnail view when Insert Picture From File is chosen.
Funny thing is that in File Open dialogue, the status of View is remembered. If you choose Detail View when opening the files, the next time you click File Open, same view is presented.
XP software is too intelligent to force a thumbnail view when the user chooses a picture. I think there may be a registry setting which controls this behavior, but I just do not know where to tweak.
If anyone who knows the registry tweak, please kindly let me know. I will be much appreciated.

Any chance you have your default folder view in WindowsXP set to Thumbnail? Maybe Office simply pulls from the default view of the OS??

I don't have XP and don't know if Publisher XP has VBA but for other office applications have a look at "Insert Picture" Dialog Box Defaults to Thumbnails View (Q301459)

I cannot imagine MS has a KB on this issue.

I will try this macro to see how it works. Meanwhile, thanks for everyone's help!
