Sorting dates in a table (2000)

    Hi,

I've been handed a Word 2000 table containing a column of dates that have simply been typed in, with the most recent date at the top of the column. Examples: Apr. 19, 2000, Oct. 20, 1999, all the way back to Dec. 27, 1867. The author has decided he would like to reverse the dates so that the oldest ones appear first.

My attempts at sorting in Word have not succeeded. I also tried copying/pasting the Word table into Excel. But unfortunately one of the columns in the Word table has some carriage returns in it - which seems to throw everything off in Excel. (Excel creates new cells.)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure if there's an elegant solution. I kinda thought that MS Office only supports dates beginning at 1/1/1900.

However, for an inelegant solution--this should work...
    (1) add an extra column in the table.
    (2) add automatic numbering to that column in the table. (Select the column, goto Format|Bullets & Numbering and select any numbered list option.)
    (3) convert the automatic numbering to plain text. (One method would be to selet the column, choose Edit|Copy and then Edit |Paste Special (Unformatted).
    (4) sort the table in descending order (be sure to specify your sort type as "Number") by the numbered column
    (5) remove the numbered column.

This worked beautifully - and not so inelegant as all that! Certainly beats a lot of moving of rows. Thanks very much.

    Wyley,

Looks like a pretty good solution that was posted.

But if you want to get a word table where some cells contain hard line returns into Excel without messing up the cells, see the post I had back in Dec at post #103898 (you can do a search right on the number - sorry I messed up getting the actual link).

    Wyley,

As a followup to my last email about post# 103898, that post is on the Excel lounge.

The first drop-down box in the search window asks what forum or category you want to search. If you do a search while in the Word lounge, the search will assume you just want to search for posts that were in the word lounge and has that pre-filled in the box. If you do this, you won't find 103898. However, you can change that drop-down to search across All Forums or change to search across just Excel (if somehow you mysteriously figured out that a reply to a post on the word lounge actually referred to the excel lounge <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>).

Thanks for this. If the situation comes up again, I'll give it a try.
