Can't view .avi files (XP)

Hi. I've just taken delivery of a Dell XP Home system, and naturally I started to transfer all my data files from my old Win98 SE system. All seems fine, except that the XP Media Player will not play .avi files except for the audio part, i.e. no picture. Once or twice I've caught a fleeting glimpse of an error message that mentions the codec, so it would appear to be a missing codec.
How can I find out which codec is missing, and where can I find it on my Win98 system to transfer it to the XP system? The XP system is NOT connected to the internet, so please don't ask me to download anything unless I can download something to the Win98 system and move it from there.

TIA

Keith, in your %systemroot%SYSTEM32 directory there should be a program called MPLAY32.EXE. It's a bone ugly, user-unfriendly media player from ages ago that will tell you exactly which codec is missing.

You can download many codecs from the web, they're fairly small (usually) but beware the varying quality of them. There is a lot of questionable stuff for download to, so make sure you get the codec from a reliable source.

A final though: AVI files can be encoded differently, so if one codec doesn't fit all, don't be surprised.

Thanks, Mark, I'll try that when I get home. I've also found some references to suggestions that the version of Media Player in XP (version 8) having 'bugs' that make this happen, and that version 6.4 should be used instead. Mean anything to you?

Thanks again.

Re: Can't view .avi files (XP)

I'd be hesitant to call them actual bugs - but I do find that support for some formats just doesn't exist in WiMP 8. I'm not highly impressed with it as a media player anyway. I've posted before about using UltraPlayer for most of my needs in the media area. It's easier on resources and the price is right:

Interesting thought though. I don't recall being able to find version 6.4 on an XP box since it ships with 8. Now I want to call off the afternoon, go home, and poke around a bit for it!! Somehow, though, I don't think the boss would care for that an awful lot...."Where are you going?" "To play around with Windows XP...."

The stuff I've seen about 6.4 says that it's still in the same directory as 8! Haven't had a chance to look yet though, so don't take my word for it! Hope that's not the signal for you to go home.......

I can control myself....but that helps immensely! So much for concentration though...
