Update Q321232 (WinME; IE5.5SP2)

After numerous attempts, I'm still unable to get the May 15 security updates to install. I looked at IE HELP to determine that I have IE 5.5 SP2 with Q316059 and Q319182 updates. After navigating to the MS download site and choosing the appropriate download, I allowed it to run from the site instead of downloading it to my hard drive. I replied Yes and Yes to the prompts and off it went never to complete (as evidenced by looking at CTL-ALT-DEL). After several hours, there was no evidence of activity on the DSL modem and no evidence of disk activity. It just sat there. I rebooted to see if the Q321232 update would show up when I launched IE, and it did not. I tried this approach several different times, each time being careful that no firewall or virus protection or any other utility was running other than what WinME loads. I even tried downloading the update to my hard drive and running it from there. Same outcome. I did notice that my system seemed to slow down remarkably; so I did a system restore to a version from 3 days ago and now it seems to be running fine. Should I download IE 6.0 and install it and it's security patch version of Q321232? Is there something else I should check? Based on Woody's advice received this week, I really would like to cover these securiy holes.

Any and all suggestions as to courses of action greatly appreciated and gratefully accepted.

Six months ago, I would have told you to never upgrade to 6.0, but it seems all the bugs have been worked out. I use it at home all the time. If I were you, I'd go ahead and upgrade. The security issue should be gone (included in the upgrade) and you'll be upgraded.

Re: Update Q321232 (WinME; IE5.5SP2)

I am using IE6 and since I installed KB article 321232 I can't load a page for my online bank account. They tried to help by making changes in my security zone and enableing cookies, which they say I have to have to view my account. I have other online bank accounts and have no problem with those. I have emptied Temporary Interenet Files, Norton Recycle Bin (both protected and unprotected), run Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk, disabled Zone Alarm Pro, disabled Norton Auto Protect and rebooted and nothing helps.

The bank technicians have given up, said they had down all they know how to do.

I was wondering if the KB article could be the cause, but the articles states that it can't be uninstalled.

Now what can I do that I haven't tried already? Will some kind soul, help me with this ?

Re: Update Q321232 (WinME; IE5.5SP2)

Well, I certainly would love to, but this sounds quite challenging...

1) Do ANY other of their clients have the same problem?
2) Is the page something you access BEFORE or AFTER you have logged in under your password?
3) Do you know if this is an "https" connection?
4) Can you describe how you are trying to "load" the page -- i.e., are you clicking a link and the link does not work?
5) Are you getting a "404 Page Not Found" Error?
6) Do you know how to "View" the source of the web page in question? Can you cut and paste that here after modify the tags? (If you don't understand, just ask).

While you cannot simply reverse the Update, you could (in theory) remove IE and re-install. Perhaps simply "repairing" IE6 is all that is needed -- you can do this under Add/Remove.

I'm certainly not the expert that others here are, but have you tried restoring your system to an earlier checkpoint? Try START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/SYSTEM RESTORE and pick a time before you installed the update. This is what Woody recommended as a way to overcome the tact that Q321232 cannot be uninstalled.

Re: Update Q321232 (WinME; IE5.5SP2)

I just noticed that I made a mistake. I have Windows 98 SE and don't have an option for System Restore. I do have Roxio's Go Back 3 installed, but this happened quite awhile ago and I don't think it can revert my system that far back.

Please forgive me for posting to the wrong subject.

I should not speak for Bob, but I don't think he would mind. Perhaps you could start your own thread? Either way, I am very interested in finding out what got screwed up by the new IE6 patch...

Re: Update Q321232 (WinME; IE5.5SP2)

First let me thank you for respondins so swiftly, then I must apoligize because I posted incorrectly. I'm running Windows 98 SE and I've posted this question there. But to reply to your questions the best I can. The back said that they had not other complaints. I have used online banking with the same bank using the same website for over a year with no problems. Yes, the website begins with https. I have then on my favorites list but when I had problems I typed it in, over and over again. No, I am not getting any messages other than the Browser Alert. Yes, I viewed the source and it is the banks website.

I was told by Microsoft that I could not uninstall Internet Explorer (any versions). I have not tried to repair IE, that's a good idea. But why would I have difficulty with just one website, wouldn't I have problems with more if IE was broken?

I think this conversation should be moved to Windows 98SE and not take up space here, do you agree?

Re: Update Q321232 (WinME; IE5.5SP2)

I have done just that, but on Windows 98 where it belonged in the first place. I make a mistake posting it on WinME. Follow the thread from there. I apoligize again for making that mistake. The subject in Win98 is Can't view but one webpage.
Thanks for your interest.
