    3GB of really hidden files?

    NT4 SP6a.
On the 6GB physical drive of my laptop, I have three drives:
    C: NTFS 1.68 GB
D: FAT 258MB (for ye olde DOS 6.22 dual boot)
    E: NTFS 4.10 GB

At best I reckon I've got about 540 MB stored on E: including anything hidden, but properties says there is 3.48 GB used and only 640MB free.

Somewhere I'm missing about 3GB of disk space.

A command prompt listing dir /s agrees that I have 540MB of files (and about 600KB of hidden files) but insists I only have 640MB free.
I have used the disk check tool and it completed OK with no messages.
I'm tempted to copy everything off and then reformat the drive, does anyone have any better ideas?

    Cheers,
    Marty

    I assume you haven't accidently set up a 3GB page file on E: ?

I wonder if you have something odd with the MFT on that drive...
Check JSI Tip 0487 and JSI Tip 0697 for some background info.

If you have Diskeeper, this will show you graphically what space is used for what.
    If you haven't got Diskeeper, I recommend you get it here. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Remember that "Marketing" uses K to equal 1,000, while the OS uses K equal 1,024
This will make up some if the difference, the formating and partitioning information uses some space also which is lost.

My intention was to copy the files out, reformat the drive, and then copy the files back in. Hopefully without disturbing any installations (two large programs). One worked fine, the other refused to behave and insisted on being uninstalled. Once it was, I recovered all my disk space and things have been fine.

Now have a few quiet questions for the software manufacturer why they think 3GB of invisible files are an acceptable way of infecting their customers PCs.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

What programs were these? It may help others in avoiding these products.

The product is iHistorian by Intellution. iHistorian is an add-on to iFix, which is a SCADA package.
I have not yet found out what exactly was the cause of the problem. Given the cause is not known, I'm not sure the experience is sufficient to avoid the product.
