    Can't view JPEG files (XP)

    Hi,
I'm just in the process of moving from a Win98 SE system to a new Dell XP system. I've moved a whole lot of JPEG files from the old to the new system, and for the most part, they are viewable in the XP system

However, there are a fair number that refuse to display at all on the XP system, though they display without problem on the Win98 SE system. I've tried all sorts, the inbuilt XP viewer, PhotoEd 97, good old IfanView, and all refuse to display the picture, stating (sometimes) that the header is invalid or similar.
Has anyone any idea of what the problem could be? Or how I might determine more exactly what's wrong?
    TIA

Seemly these files were corrupt during transfer process. Try to copy them once again. If it will not work, try to copy them to another folder on the same Win98 computer and then check them. If everyting is OK, transfer them to WinXP computer.

You did NOT state as to HOW your are transfering these files. It appears that the copy that is on the new hardrive is messed up. Try reading a copy from a floppy or the source of your transfer and see it it works. You may need to make new copies on you new harddrive.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

You're right of course - they were corrupted in the transfer. I should have tried again! Thanks for the help.

Re: Can't view JPEG files (XP)

Yes, you're right, they were corrupt! I'd moved them on a Zip disk that filled up, but instead of leaving just one at most corrupt, it left dozens of them. Oh well, I should have tried again! Last night I burnt a CD and used that - now all is fine. One more question though - I'd rather use IfanView as the default image viewer, but though I associate the extensions with IfanView, double clicking on the images still brings up the XP image viewer in the window. How can I stop this? Anyone?

    TIA

Store them in the folder other than "My Pictures"

RClick any picture file. From the Menu choose 'Open with...' This lists all your image viewers, or allows you to select an alternative. Be sure to check 'always use this program to open this type of file' found below the list.

Re: Can't view JPEG files (XP)

I've been having the same problem, although not in the context of transferring them from one computer/OS to another on. I have Win XP Pro and I've downloaded several pics to the 'my pictures' folder in 'my documents'. A majority of the pics will display once I've double clicked them. However, there are a few that won't display. I click on them and the Microsoft viewer says "can't display preview" or something to that effect. Any suggested fixes/solutions? Please advise. Thanks...Dave.

Re: Can't view JPEG files (XP)

Well MerC, I tried that already and haven't found a viewer that displays the pics. All the pics that I'm working with are JPEG files. Each pic was put in the folder the same way (pics sent to me via email). I guess the real question is: why are some pics' viewable, while some aren't. Any suggestions or work-arounds will be appreciated.

Re: Can't view JPEG files (XP)

    A few random jottings :

    i. download Irfan View from my site - it's an excellent image manipulator and it's free. Worth a try anyway.

ii. If you got the .jpg files by email, are you quite sure they are not script files masquerading as jpg - if so they have a hidden extension and are potentially dangerous to your system. Your safety precaution application may have removed the extraneous part, making them appear to be genuine jpg images, which they are not.

ii. run Regedit.exe, (don't worry, you're not going to make any changes yet) click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and scroll down to the .jpg extension. Let's know exactly what appears there.

Good idea about Regedit, so I'll try it tonight.
