To Stick or Not To Stick (Win XP Pro)

In searching through this forum to see if my question might be answered, I saw posts about window sizes and such, but none about XP's new "Tiles." I have a few folders on my desktop, the contents of which I like to display using the Tiles feature. Unfortunately, the selection won't "stick." Some time later when I come back to the folders, the contents will be displayed in List form instead of Tiles. Usually they will ALL be that way, indicating that something Win XP did has reset the display of those folders. Sometimes even the icons inside Control Panel will also switch from Tiles to List. I have no idea what's causing it.

I also picked up the tip from InfiniSource that you can turn OFF the display of zip files as folders in Windows Explorer by using the RUN command with: regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll and this change won't stick either. Those @#$%& zip files will start showing up again as folders.

I guess I could understand it if I had run a Windows Update or something impacting the whole operating system. But when I haven't done anything that I'm aware of, I can't figure out what's triggering these changes. Win XP seems to have a mind of its own concerning stickiness!

    Anyone.....?

To make this stick one must open My documents or Windows Explorer, make the View changes, and then in "Tools, files options" under the View Tab, select "Apply to all folders" button. Now when you restart My Documents and/or Windows Explorer the sttinge should be their.

If you want just a few folder in this condition you must turn on the Option to "Remember Folders settings", in the Advance pane of the View tab of folder options. But iy you EVER do the first step again "Apply to all Folders", ALL folder and their setting have been changed.

Thanx, Dave! Did 'em both! No Luck!

When I first install an OS like I did XP in January, I open up Windows Explorer and go to Tools, Folder Options. While in Explorer, I set a directory to show DETAILS and set the options for this to be applied to ALL folders. After a restart to make sure that took, I then start setting individual folders like the one on my desktop, however I want them.

That's what's so annoying about this one. "Remember..." is definitely checked but XP's remembrances ain't so good.....

Kick it in the b...t by by clearing that selection, quick Explorer, restart Explorer, and reselect the option. Then restat Explorer. Sometimes this will clear things up.

OK Dave, I tried your "workaround" and I'll have to see. I even closed and re-opened Explorer and re-booted the machine to see if the desktop folder settings stuck. So far, they did. Now I'll have to remember to check 'em more frequently to see if I can catch what operation is causing 'em to revert. Thanx for the suggestions!

Just that old swift kick in the old arss, will do the trick once in a while. Just like getting a jackass to more when he does not want to.

Re: To Stick or Not To Stick (Win XP Pro)

Well, just in case anyone else, besides you and I , is monitoring this thread, Dave..... This morning I checked the SIX folders I have on my desktop and two of them have reverted to showing "details" view instead of "tiles" as I left 'em last night when I went to bed. Although I admit I didn't check on them during the evening, I'm wondering whether some OS generated activity causes this problem. I don't have any scheduled tasks running on this machine EXCEPT that I have left XP's System Restore turned on ever since I installed this OS. I see that a "restore point" was created by the system last night at 8:07 PM. I'll never know if that did it, for sure, but I just turned off system restore since I use Drive Image anyway.

Weird behaviour, to say the least.....

Re: To Stick or Not To Stick (Win XP Pro)

Just adding to the saga, after I made that post earlier today, I again set all the desktop folders to "tiles" view. Well, after doing nothing on this PC for the last several hours but email and net browsing, all but one of the folders has switched AGAIN to the "details" view. There's definitely something going on behind the scenes with the OS. Even Control Panel, which I set to "tiles" this morning, is now showing "details" view again.

What's amazing to me is that I haven't been able to find anyone else who's having this problem! Either it's something unique to MY machine and its settings or it's so unimportant that nobody else notices such trivia (probably the latter).

Re: To Stick or Not To Stick (Win XP Pro)

I switch views so often that I don't know which view i used on which folder (and i have the folders set to remember views). i have noticed some oddness with window sizes and when the windows make themselves full screen i think the view changes too. But i can't be 100% sure on the window resize, because I use WTS to access the machine often and the screen resolution is differnet with the machines, forcing different window sizes. I have seen several other reports about window sizing issues at google, you might want to search at http://groups.google.com for reports of view problems.

Thanx for the tip, MJ. Evidently my ISP's newreader was downlevel, 'cause I didn't have visibility to ANY of the WinXP newsgroups. But they're rectifying the situation. When I looked at just two of the groups, it appears that MANY people are having trouble with Win XP changing the view of folders.

Edited by MaryJ on 21-May-02 18:32.
i usually use groups.google.com, since most of the problems were already asked about, but microsoft also has their own server at msnews.microsoft.com

[so much for trying to make it clickable. ]

there is a really lame interface to the msnews groups here:

Re: To Stick or Not To Stick (Win XP Pro)

For what (if anything) this is worth to anyone, I went browsing in several of the XP newsgroups and found LOTS of people are having the problem with non-sticking folder settings, as well as window size-location problems. Didn't see much in the way of solid answers, with one possible exception.

One person suggested deleting a couple of registry keys and I don't know why. But what the heck, I backed up my registry, exported the two keys in question and gave it a shot. For anyone interested, the two keys he said to delete are:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellNoRo amBagMRU]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellNoRo amBags]

I did it earlier today and so far my desktop folder windows are retaining their settings. Anyone?

Well, here it is 24 hours later and my folder settings are still sticking! Don't know that we'll ever figure out what the WinXP problem is, but.....

Don't want to beat a deceased equine, so I won't say any more unless asked. But I'm just thrilled that it's more than TWO DAYS and all my folder settings are still sticking - tiles on the desktop folders, icons in Control Panel and details in Explorer. Whoever that gentleman was who posted those two registry tweaks MUST know what he's talking about!
