    Timer driver (Excel 97)

Suddenly I am getting this mysterious message "The timer driver is not installed on this system. Microsoft Excel cannot run without the timer dirver." Never saw that before. I can't press ALT+F11 to start the VBA module. the Panes seem to load and then XL hangs up. I get a Not Responding message in the Close Program box concerning Visual Basic. Ending that task ends Excel. No reference is found inside the Excel help.
Any suggestions as to what has happened? Thanks.
