that annoying little messenger icon (XP Pro)

Ever since I installed XP and OE6, I find that opening OE will open the Windows Messenger icon as well. I disabled all the XP survey crap, I've disabled every option for Messenger, I've made set it to manual in the System Tasks control panel, and I've told Messenger not to run on startup. And yet.....about one in three times I open OE, there's that stupid little pawn piece in my system tray. It's disabled, yes, but it's still there.

Anyone know why, or if there's a truly effective way to put a bullet through the little guy's head?

It is part of Outlook express. There are ways to uninstall it (Messenger) but, some of the Windows updates require it and will reinstall it. So just learn to live with it in the disabled mode.

You will find that as MS provides more services the more it will be required. It is being used in the "Remote" tools of Windows XP.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Does that imply I'm going to have to start using it sooner or later....?

That may be a YES, if you want to use some of the newer to be services.
Like the use of a Passport, to get information and/or to visit some MS sites.

Algorhythm, I'm with you on this

I really detest Microsoft's insistence on putting the Messenger pawns in my System Tray and inserting the reference in to the Registry at HKCU/Run (Key - MSMSGS) I keep having to dump it in the

I use OE6 as my Newsreader, but if I can't find a way to stop this intrusive behaviour my Microsoft Messenger it's probably time to look for a more friendly and unintrusive Newsreader
