Display Properties Won't stay

My father called me and said he is trying to change the display properties on his computer (win98) and he can select the new settings, but after he clicks on Apply, Ok and restarts the PC, it goes back to the old settings. I suggested that maybe his video driver isn't loaded and he should update the driver. Told him how to do this, but there is only one driver listed and he can't find his Win98 disk. Is there a way to get that wizard to look for files on the internet?

No, but it should be simple enough for him to get the name and model of the monitor and look THAT up on the internet.

Try this:
go to
My Computer
/Control Panel
/System
/Device Manager tab
/Click the + beside the item to update driver
/Hi-light item in list
/Click Properties
/Click Driver Tab
/Click update driver
/Check box for Search Windows Update Site
Go from there to try to find a driver on the web.
Mabe it was just something that I had but that worked for me once; It's worth a try.

Thanks. You're right. But, the fonts are so huge and the screen so big, he can't navigate the internet. We were hoping for something that woudl grab the info from a site without user intervention. Oh well. Thanks.

Kind of a shot in the dark, so please bear with me if it sounds like a bad suggestion.

Has your father by chance, used the "msconfig" to enable / disable start-up options, and when doing so, inadvertently turned off the win.ini and / or the system.ini tick boxes?

Another suggestion, also just as far fetched, does he have an up-to-date, and working virus checker? Maybe a little @#$!% slipped through .

Thanks for all your replies. My father found the CD after my last post and was able up update the display drivers. Whoopee! We'll see what other trouble he can get into now!
