    Over Formatting (2002)

When using Word 2002 (10.2627.2625) formatting selected text (including right align, embolden, italicize or apply bullets) often (but not always) causes that formatting to be applied to all text in the document. Clicking in the 'undo' icon restores everything to as it should be, with the desired formatting only applied to the selected text.

    Is this a documented problem?

Are your styles, Normal in particular, set for auto-updating? In that case, manual formatting can modify the underlying style. You can check this as follows:
    Format/Style...
Select a style, for instance Normal
    Click Modify...
See if the Automatically update box is checked. You can uncheck it of you wish.
