i cant get into my data (access 97)

Hi, i have developed an access 97 (jet3.51) database through visual studio (vb6) and have now come across a BIG problem.

the application stopped getting data from the database so i opened it via access. the database screen opens ok and the tables/queries/forms all show.

however, when i try to open any object i get an error dialog saying "Not a Valid Bookmark". error no 3159.

has anyone got any ideas how i can rescue this db ?

i have tried repairing the database from the access menu but it runs for maybe 5 minutes and then a dialog pops up saying "Out of Memory" and thats it.

I'd look in the reference libraries.
Make sure that the libraries are compatible with which ever ones were used to create the objects in the first place.
Just guessing, though.

You might want to try using JetComp to repair the database. You can get this from Microsoft site. It often repairs problems the internal repair can't.

Also, you can try creating a new database in Access, then importing all the objects from the old database.

Forms? How would you create Access forms in VB6? It uses a whole different flavor of form.

busted!
no forms, cancel the forms.
there are just tables and queries !!!

Re: i cant get into my data (access 97)

limited success:
jetcomp fails giving an error of..... yep - not a valid bookmark

importing into a new database gives a not a valid bookmark error for each and every query in the bust database but it has imported tha tables and associated data.

thanks so far.

does anyone have any idea what would have caused this as i am nervous about letting the application out if it will crash the database with a completed structure and full set of data.

I don't know what caused it, but it does illustrate one of the most important reasons for using a split-database schema (frontend and backend). Quite frankly, you are asking for trouble if you distribute a single-database solution.

You do it from VB6 (Project-->References), but in Access, you'll have to hit Alt+F11, get into the code window and look for Tools-->References.

Re: i cant get into my data (access 97)

Mark , I agree totally about splitting the total solution into a front and back end. To this point the front end is a visual basic application and the back end is the access database that has just turn up its toes and died.

great philosophy but not something that saves me from the current predicament !

MS/TechNet dont seem to give any clues about the Not a Valid Bookmark error so the cause seems to be untraceable at the moment

Do they have to be exactly the same in order to be compatible or is there some overlap?

Re: i cant get into my data (access 97)

It depends. They won't use exactly the same libraries. I keep going back to your early statement that this database was *built* in VB. Had you ever opened it in Access before, and are you sure it's a 97 database? If I remember correctly, the Visual Data Manager add-in is still stuck on 97, but the data environment is perfectly capable of working with Access 2000.

Re: i cant get into my data (access 97)

yep, this db has been open in Access 97 probably a dozen times previously and never given any problems.
I was not aware that the DE worked with 2000 and had assumed that it would be 97 (or 2!), like the VDM.
