    INCONSISTENT PRINTING PUZZLER (2K SR-1)

Ever since Office 2000 has been installed on several PCs, when they print to an HP4100 (envelope tray, and two other trays, one for letterhead) they get inconsistent errors. The print drivers are correct and have been switched many times. They'll set it to print three copies of a Word document, and then when they print in Internet Explorer three copies will be printed. They'll change an Excel document to landscape and GroupWise (our email software) will also print in landscape mode. ANY IDEAS ANYONE?? tia!

I don't have O2K so I may be wide of the mark, but you say the user changes the paper orientation when printing from Excel. In O98 you can only do this by changing the properties of the printer, in which case it will affect the other packages.

Are they actually changing the printer settings or are the using page setup to change the settings for the *document*. It sounds like the former from the results you're experiencing. When you say the drivers are "correct", does that mean they're the latest version of those drivers from HP?

That's what's odd. The settings are only being changed in the Print dialogue box from within the Office app, not from the printer properties. I played with the printer properties separately and that doesn't seem to have any effect on the strange behavior.

If you click on the Properties button in the Print dialog box, and change the orentation there, you are changing the printer settings, not the document. To change the document, you have to select Page Setup from the File menu and change it there.

Right. But I was just checking the properties out to see if they affected the problem and they didn't seem to.
I can go into Word, go to File Print, set the number of copies to 2 in that dialog box and when I go to IE it will try to print two copies.

So today two users were using the printer and for no apparent reason it started printing in landscape for both users of that printer. I'm beginning to think this is a goofy printer issue, but it IS odd that it only started popping up AFTER they upgraded to Office 2K.

What type of network are you running?

Is it possible that the print queue is sending some type of control string to the printer before each print job?

We're trying to figure that out. We swapped two identical printers, one was having the problem, one wasn't. Now the problem is happening on the swapped in printer, but not on the swapped out one (if that makes sense!). We're going to try a different print server next.

    We're on a Novell network.

    AngelaJ,

When I had a similar problem while at work using Win 2000 Pro and Office 2000, I printed test documents from Word and set the print out using Word

In other words, the problem is local to the domain the printer is operating in, not to the printer itself.

Exactly, but how to narrow it down from there, I'm not sure.

    Aside to Charlotte - domain <img src=/S/flee.gif border=0 alt=flee width=25 height=25>

Angela, you could check the PCONSOLE - PRINTER - STARTING FORM TYPE but this is unlikely as the result would be consistant.

It maybe the printer servers themselves, do you happen to know what they are?

The print servers are Axis 560s.
