    Word 97 - Captions for Tables Error (Word 97 - SR-1)

    In Word 97 - SR-1 (don't laugh ... that's what we're still using at the bank I work at)
    I select a table,
    right click,
    click on Caption...,
I use the defaults: Caption: Table 1-1 (in bold), Label: Table, Position: Below selected item
    Click OK
It gives the following Error: Table Error! No text of specified style in document.-1
    (the style box shows Caption)
Does anyone know what causes this error; How can it be fixed??? Was it something that was fixed in SR-2 which we don't have where I work?

Works fine for me -- even in a blank table.
You might want to try Word troubleshooting.

I don't have Word 97, but the middle part of that error is very familiar to me from using STYLEREF fields. I don't know why the Caption command would use a STYLEREF field, but maybe you can debug it by pressing Alt-F9 and figuring out what it is looking for. In other words:

Field codes toggled to show results:

Error: Table Error! No text of specified style in document.-1

Field codes toggled to show codes:

Error: Table { STYLEREF SomeStyleName }.-1

I have seen this exact error.

The table caption in your example is Table 1-1
This style of caption is created by specifying "Include Chapter Number" in the "Numbering" options of the Insert Caption dialog box. It actually uses the number from the previous Heading 1 for the first part of the caption number.

In your example you show the error as "Table Error! No text of specified style in document.-1". This strongly suggests that you don't have a Heading1 in your document before the caption, so it can't find a number to use.

Try inserting a paragraph with Heading1 format somewhere in the document before your first Table.
