Odd/Even Headers and Section Breaks (Word 2000, SR-1)

It appears that the PageSetup property OddAndEvenPagesHeaderFooter is *not* section dependent as one would be led to believe. For example, the code
    ActiveDocument.Sections(1).PageSetup.OddAndEvenPag esHeaderFooter = False
    ActiveDocument.Sections(2).PageSetup.OddAndEvenPag esHeaderFooter = True
results in both sections having Different odd and even check (true). Is this a know bug or something particular to my installation? I found nothing at MicroSoft.

No, it is not section-independent. It either applies to the whole document or not. If you're having specific goal, let us know, we may be able to provide a workaround or solution.

Re: Odd/Even Headers and Section Breaks (Word 2000, SR-1)

    Hi Art:
First, I am not a VBA expert. However:

    1. Header/Footers are a section propery.
    2. A section can have 3 different header/footers: first page, odd page, & even page.
    3. In order that a section have a different header/footer setup than other sections, you must click the button in the header/footer toolbar that says "Same as previous". This disconnects the header/footer from the previous section.

Since I am not a VBA expert, I don't know the equivalent VBA command that "disconnects the header" from the previous section. Your macro, though, is the equivalent of:
    1. clicking in the section one header/footer
    2. going to Page Setup/Layout tab & choosing "Different odd and even".
    3. Putting the cursor in section 2
    4. Going to Page Setup/Layout tab and unticking "Different odd and even".

Until you click "Same as previous", a change in one header will change all headers.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Odd/Even Headers and Section Breaks (Word 2000, SR-1)

    Art, Phil:

Don't know if this a 'known' (i.e. acknowledged) bug or not, but it definitely seems to be a bug.

As Phil points out, the header/footers can readily be adjusted however you want them, via the user interface.
However the code as you posted it, does not work.
Following Phil's suggestion, I've tried variations on turning of the "SameAsPrevious" property ("LinkToPrevious"), but it still doesn't work.
I also tried trying to reproduce user behavior by having the code move the selection to each section in turn, and address the section as Selection.Sections(1) rather than ActiveDocument.Sections(1 or 2) etc. - makes no difference.

Perhaps someone else here has come up with a workaround for this problem, but it does seem to be a bug.

Have you tried manually inserting a specific odd or even page, section break?

Re: Odd/Even Headers and Section Breaks (Word 2000, SR-1)

If I understand your post, the odd/even header feature of Word is intended to be section dependent ("not section-independent"=section-dependent). Well, I'm unable to get it to work.

Anyway, I used the code snippet to simplify the description of the challenge.

My goal is to have one or more sections of a Word document with odd/even headers and other sections of the same document with the same header (i.e., *not* odd/even). I have disassociated section headers from each other (i.e., not the same as previous), set the individual section attributes via File-> Page Setup-> layout, then define the headers as desired. The challenge, although I select Apply to "This Section" when changing the odd/even header attribute, always affects all sections!

Per other posts to the thread, others have confirmed this to be a bug of Word. Do you agree?

Re: Odd/Even Headers and Section Breaks (Word 2000, SR-1)

I haven't found anything for Word 2000, but for Word 97 Microsoft states that
<hr>Different Odd and Even Pages for Headers and Footers are document-specific settings. Making this setting in any section of a document will affect the entire document.<hr>
    in KB article Q81441.

So I think the only thing you can do is:
<UL><LI>Set different odd/even headers and footers for the whole document.
<LI>Unlink the sections (turn Same as Previous off).
<LI>Enter exactly the same text for odd and even pages in those sections you don't want to have different odd/even headers and footers.[/list]

    Hans,

    Thanks much for confirming what I suspected. <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>
