Full Justified Para's in Numbered List (Word)

Use Word's Numbering command and type a few numbered paragraphs with a blank line (Shift-Enter)between the numbered paragraphs. Then highlight/select all numbered paragraphs and click on the "Justify" button to fully justify these paragraphs. Is there a way to prevent the last line from spreading across the page?? Thanks for any input!! Bob

No...you're not using a paragraph return. It's a line break. Put a paragraph return on the last line, instead of a line break, and you should be okay.

    Hi Bob:
You don't mention which version of Word but in Word 2000 (& possibly other versions that I can't check right now), you can change this behavior by going to Tools/Options/Compatibility tab & ticking "Don't expand character spaces on the line ending in shift+return".

    Cheers,

    Bob,

To amplify Phil's response for Word 97, there is a compatibility option in Word 97 that's worded "Expand character spaces on line ending Shift-Return". But I tested it with a list and it seems to have no effect. With a 2-item list and shift+return at the end, I justified the para. The spaces were expanded and the option was turned off (no check). Checked it and no difference.

If what you're trying to achieve is to have extra space between list items, why not define a style for the list items? In fact, Word already has some built-in styles for list items with extra space after the paragraph. If the amount of space is too little (3 points), you can change the style definition.

    Hi Fred:
I just tested Word 97 & couldn't find a difference in the behavior of lines regardless of the tickmark in Tools/Compatiblity. It also didn't matter whether I left or right justified or whether it was a list or normal text. Ticking & unticking the option made no difference. I know there was a difference in Word 2000. Another puzzle.

    Hi Phil,

This proves the age-old question: when is an option not an option? Trust MS to make you think you're getting something when they really are giving you nothing. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>
