    explorer (xp)

Why is My Doc before My Computer (alphabetically C is before D). I also want to start always with My doc compressed tree and My Computer expanded tree.
Is there a way to do this

Under properties of the "Start" button you might clear the check mark in the "Expand My Documents" See attachment if this is what you want.

    I want My Doc collapsed
My Computer expanded, but under C:/ all folders

If you go to Control Panel | Taskbar and Start Menu | Customize | Start Menu | Advanced... you can choose to have My Computer displayed as a menu item. The result is below - is that what you're looking for? Alternatively, you open C: in an explorer window and drag and drop the ie icon (the first item in the address bar before the URL) on the left hand side of the Start Menu as a shortcut.

    how about making a shortcut with something like explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, "C:"

This opens with a collapsed explorer root. To open it with a drive expanded, change the path to something like C:windows

    Re: explorer (xp)

The reason My Documents appears before My Computer in Windows Explorer is due to a registry setting that sets one or the other as the first icon on the desktop (whether or not they actually appear on the desktop... but do note that the first item displayed by Windows Explorer is "Desktop"). You can change this with TweakUI for Windows XP, but be aware that doing this with previous versions of Windows broke something to do with the Start button. I can't remember exactly, but I think some options were greyed-out when you right-clicked the Start button.

To open Windows Explorer with My Documents collapsed, My Computer expanded and the C drive expanded, try this:

Right-click the Start Menu item or shortcut you use to launch Windows Explorer and select Properties. On the Shortcut tab, change the Target entry to read: %SystemRoot%explorer.exe /n,/e,C:

There is a space between .exe and /n.

I stand corrected, Mark... you're right. However, I still have this nagging feeling that there was some effect (adverse or not) to changing the first icon. The operative word here is "was". It may not apply to XP.

Aye, even if it doesn't affect XP per se, it has its own subset if "features" that make life interesting... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

This behavior was caused by using TweakUI to hide drives in My Computer. Changing the order of the "first icon on desktop" should not have any ill effects.
