Re: Virus Alert: AnnaKournikova Virus

Eileen,
Is there space/scope for a virus information board here? All I'm thinking is that the WOW issue didn't go out - to the best of my knowledge - till 14th Feb, whereas the first warning I had of kournikova was on the 12th, and a reissue on the 13th along with a heads-up on cartolina/loveletter. I know that any such forum would have to be heavily moderated to preclude gossip/rumours and include only hard facts, but if someone could post the question:

What about LastestNastyVirus.jpg.vbs? (or similar)

and someone in the know (WOW staff only?) could post the response:

Heard about it yesterday, checking today, verdict expected tomorrow, precations to take meantime....

Would this help anyone?

My thoughts are that WOW is delivered by email. What happens if I dial up to receive WOW and get an infected email in the same batch. That would be annoying to say the least. (incidentally, I just subscribed to all the newsletters at my works email as well as my home email; a temporary fix - but at least I know to take care with my own machine when I get home.)

I realise that such a forum would probably be more trouble than it's worth, but it would be interesting to hear other opinions on the subject.

Brooke

Re: Virus Alert: AnnaKournikova Virus

With all due respect to the members of this lounge, I get far many more 'hoax' warnings from friends than genuine alerts. I normally respond with links to various information sites and a polite suggestion they check them before mass mailing.
Whilst I appreciate there could be great benefit in such a forum, my fear would be that it may be prone to misleading information.
A solution may be to have all postings vetted, but this would probably require 24/7 moderation. Alternatively, it could be stipulated that all postings contain a direct link to a reputable site showing the validity of the warning.

As a matter of interest, our mail server virus scanner checks hourly for updates, and rarely a day goes by without at least one update to virus definitions being downloaded. And I don't just mean one - there may be upwards of 40 or 50 new within that one set.

The current 'Anna' virus, whilst a valid threat, owes much of its infamy to being a great news story. It is only one of many out there.

My personal view is that it really comes down to good housekeeping and common sense. A new rampant virus should not make any difference to your modus operandi - you should be taking precautions in the first place. Eileen's WOW attachment says it all.

Re: Virus Alert: AnnaKournikova Virus

Leif, I agree with everything you say, but most of the posters to the Lounge are responsible, and there is an occasional need for virus info.

To my embarrassment, on the day when Kournikova was taking the world by storm, I permitted my home machine to be infected by the older, but unfamiliar to me, HYBRIS virus. (Norton didn't catch it.) I was able to clean it out, knock on wood, but had a lot of trouble finding accurate and complete information on it's removal, even from the "name" sources (Symantec, McAfee).

So I'm in favor of a heavily moderated Virus forum.

John, I take your point. If nothing else, the Forum may act as a constant reminder to keep people on their toes.
So, all we need now are several volunteers evenly distributed around the globe.....

Personally, I've never got on with McAfee so rarely visit the site. For your interest, I tend to refer to the site (source of our definitions) as well as Datafellows/F-Secure for virus and hoax info.

Re: Virus Alert: AnnaKournikova Virus

We discourage too much virus talk in the Lounge because of the potential hazards. During my years as WOPR Webmaster I always had up-to-date Virus Information posted on the website. It has been sadly neglected since I retired but you can see it in it's present state at Nasties. Claude is busy reworking the whole site so no doubt it will soon be restored to its former glory.
