PICTURES DON'T PRINT (Word 2000 (Office 2000 Pro))

Can someone tell me why pictures in a Word document copied from a webpage won't print on my HP LJ2100? And, what do I do to fix the problem? Text prints fine.

Whilst I do not use that model HP printer, I have a workaround that I put up with whilst quietly cursing the software/hardware.

I simply select the text by clicking and dragging across it with the mouse, copy it and then paste into a wordprocessor (I use MS Word). If the pictures don't come with the text, and that happens a lot, I copy the pictures individually and then paste them where required.

Additionally, this gives me some editorial control over the document unless there are copyright issues to consider.

Re: PICTURES DON'T PRINT (Word 2000 (Office 2000 Pro))

The problem is not copying the picture into Word; with that I have no difficulty. But, when I print the webpage material which I have edited in Word, the pictures simply don't print, although they appear in the Word document and in Word's Print Preview. In fact, I can copy the text and pictures from Word into an email, send myself the email, and print the received email on the same printer with no loss of pictures. But, if I copy the received email into Word, the pictures don't come along, just as happens when I try and print the original document from Word. The pictures are obviously contained in the Word document, or they are referenced there. However, if Word is only referencing the pictures in the file, I can find no clue as to where Word is getting them from. There is no hyperlink indicated, and Word cannot go on the net without my permission since I have restricted it in my Zone Alarm Pro firewall.
Also, if I print the original webpage in IE6, the pictures print with it, so it's not my printer. Word is somehow not processing the pictures in true wysiwyg.
As a further experiment, I copied just the picture (the same one that won't print) directly from the webpage into Word. The picture copied with no problem, but when I try to print it, the picture disappears from the Word document, the printed page is blank, and the Word document remains blank, except the blank picture frame is still there if you click on the space the picture used to occupy. After a minute or so, the picture reappears in Word. Strange, no?

Could you zip & upload the document containing a picture that won't print to the Lounge?

Re: PICTURES DON'T PRINT (Word 2000 (Office 2000 Pro))

The file with pictures (2) that won't print is attached. There is one picture (Projection TV set) at the top of page 1, and a second picture at the end (TV remote).
The webpage from which the original document was copied, and then edited in Word (converting text and pictures from nested tables to text via Word's "Table/Convert/Table to Text" menu selection) can be found at http://www.toshiba.com/tacp/tv/current/50HX81.html.
Note, however, that I copied the webpage via the clipboard into Word, not by using the IE6 menu selection "File/Edit with Microsoft Word for Windows." Loading the webpage into Word with that command produces weirder results, literally destroying the document, including the pictures (no text except for error messages and "pictures" that are apparently corrupted) , showing a number of "Error! Hyperlink reference not valid" error messages on the "printed" page. All this happens after an initial and repeated on-screen error message "The dimensions after resizing are too small or too large" followed by a second message, also repeated several times, "The number must be between 1 and 6550." Also worth noting is that the very process of printing alters the Word document to make it look like what is printed.
I obtained the same results printing to PaperPort that I got with my HP LJ2100, but can't include them with the Zipfile containing my edited Word file since they take it over the 100K limit. However, a jpeg image of one printed page is included in the zipfile to illustrate what happens to the pictures when printed from Word after being sent to it using the "File/Edit with Microsoft Word for Windows" menu selection in IE6.

    I have no solution.

This is just to let you know that the document printed fine, including all pictures (*) from Word 97 (Dutch, SR2) to a HP LaserJet 5/5M (Postscript).

(*) Besides the two you mention, there are several other pictures - some containing text, like "HDTV" and "CINEMA SERIES", and some horizontal lines.

Your file didn't print properly on my system either (Word 2000, Windows 2000). I had that problem on another file recently (also obtained from an online source). In that case and in your file, just copying the picture from the file, pasting it into Powerpoint (or another graphics program) then copying and pasting it back into the orignal file solved the problem.

The attached file is your original with only the above described copy/paste/copy/paste sequence different.

Weird? Yup, but that's computing in the Microsoft world.

Re: PICTURES DON'T PRINT (Word 2000 (Office 2000 Pro))

    Flip,

Thanks for the try, but your doc behaves no differently than my original. When I try to print it, the picture of the TV disappears from the screen and is nowhere to be found on the printed page. Shortly after the printing process is complete, the picture returns to the screen. I had already tried copying the picture to another graphics program (PaperPort), and then copying it back to the Word doc, but that produced no discernibly different result either. Any other ideas?

If I had to guess, it appears Word can't take the document for its own, and seems to need to have some communication with the web to print. Oddly, when I attempt to print the file, my Zone Alarm Pro firewall intercepts a Word attempt to go online, but Word goes ahead anyway and prints the file before I can respond to the request for permission. Could it be the firewall that's the culprit? Or, perhaps, it's Norton's AntiVirus which I also use.

Also, why do only the photographic images not print, while the graphic images in the file print with no problem?

Re: PICTURES DON'T PRINT (Word 2000 (Office 2000 Pro))

    Hans,

Thanks for your reply. I have a feeling the problem has something to do with Word 2000's web functions that I don't think are in Word 97. I'm also fairly sure the printer is not at fault, largely because the pictures that don't print disappear from the screen during the printing process. (See my reply to Flip's posting.)

When you printed, did you have an antivirus program running? A firewall? Were you connected to the net at the time?

I think you are on the right track with the web. Try this version of your file. Under Edit/Links, sure enough there were some links. I broke them all and it printed fine for me.

Re: PICTURES DON'T PRINT (Word 2000 (Office 2000 Pro))

    Hello Bob,

When I printed, VirusScan NT from Network Associates (with the most recent update) was active, and the corporate firewall.

The first time, I was online using the corporate network. Just now, I closed Internet Explorer and printed the doc again - same results: pictures don't disappear from the screen and print OK.

    I don't have Word 2000, so I can't test that for you.

    Regards,
    Hans

    Hello,

I did not have any problems printing the original document with Word 2000, SR1 under Win98, HP 4050 PS printer. I know this sounds obvious, but did you check to see that "Drawing objects" were selected on the Tools, Options, Print, Include with Document tab?

    That was it!

Your nolinks version printed properly. I broke the links in your tweaked version and it printed properly, and then I broke the links in my original doc and it, too, printed properly. Why does Word do these things?

    Thanks a million!

That's the way my settings are. See my response to Flip's posting for the culprit and solution.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi, Hans,

The problem is apparently a Word 2000 problem. See Flip's postings and my response.

    Thanks for your help.

    Bob
