    Updating Attachments (Outlook 97 (sr2))

A weird problem has come about on one of my bosses pc's. Whenever he receives an email attaching a Word document that he his to review and send back he has problems getting Outlook to acknowledge that the document is updated and needs saving back to the email.

His process is open the attachment via usual double click > edit the doc > click Save in Word (to update the copy saved in the temp dir) > closes word > closes email.

However when closing the email I would normally expect to receive a prompt to update the message with the updated attachment but it closes and deletes the temporary file and thus losing the amendments made. Even if you choose to save the message before closing it still does not update it with the amended attachment.

For the time being he's getting around the issue by saving the attachment > opening and amending and then sending it on.

Has anyone seen this behavior before and if so how was it corrected? Deinstall and Reinstall?

    Many thanks <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

    No...this is default behavior--perfectly normal.

Rule: You cannot edit an email that has been RECEIVED. This includes the file attachment.

I have not tried it but PERHAPS, he can hit forward, edit it, and then save and send---I don't know.

Attachments aren't designed to be edited within emails. Read, print, sure. So for best results, detach the file to your desktop, edit it, reply with the new file attached.

actually, you CAN edit received mail and depending on the version of outlook, you can edit the attachments and changes are saved on the message. I'm not sure which version/update changed how attachments are handled, but if it was updated recently, that could be the cause. I don't think any windows updates would affect it, but that is possible too.

Long time since I used OL97, but the prompt you describe does come up in OL2000.

For purposes of knowing the contents of the original, however, it probably would be better to leave the original "as is" and work with a copy rather than save the change into the original message.

    Particularly if you're a lawyer. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
