    Bottom of Page Won't Print (2002 SP1, Windows 2000)

    Frequently when trying to print small documents like letters to an HP Laserjet 4000T, the bottom of the document will fail to show in either print preview, or when printing.

    It does display in Normal and Print Layout.

    We've updated the printer drivers, renamed the normal.dot, tried cutting and pasting into a new document, and saved as RTF, per the MS Knowledge Base; no luck.

    The only thing that has worked consistently is to completely exit out of Word and then reboot the computer.

    Any ideas? TIA!

    Have you deleted all temp files & checked to see if there's anything in the startup folder that's causing it? Also, if there is a particular document where it seems to happen, start Word from the command line (Start/Run) & type

    winword.exe /a
    <enter>

    & then open the document. if these letters are all starting from the same template, see if it's corrupt. It wouldn't be something simple like having the bottom of the letter with a style that has hidden text, which doesn't print?

    We have deleted the temp files. The only thing in the start up folder is Microsoft Office. We have renamed the old normal.dot, which hasn't made any difference. The problem is not document specific. It can be a new one or on changes made to an existing one. If the whole system is re-started, the document can be printed correctly most times. Hidden text can't be the problem, as all the text displays in Normal and Print Layout--it's only in Print Preview and when printing that we have the problem.

    We had another strange example happen yesterday: on a six page landscape document, the non-printing area was one the left hand side of each page.

    I will try starting Word the way you suggest. What does the /a switch do?

    It starts Word without normal.dot & without any global templates, libraries, or add-ins. For that reason, It's a good diagnostic tool for testing to see what could be causing problems by normal.dot or add-ins.

    We've had a similar experience in Word 2000 with HP 4000s and HP 4050s (click here for the discussion on our problem).

    In our case, switching to IP printing from a server-side point-and-print configuration 'solved' the problem; however, another poster has observed this problem with parallel printing (see this post).

    perhaps another driver will solve the problem--although the PS driver didn't help us in our situation. if you don't need all the paper handling features, perhaps an earlier driver would work?

    please let us know if you discover anything on this! thanks.
