    export registry value alone!!!

    Hi,

    We are looking for tool to export registry value. It should export only required registry value not all registry values under a key. for eg

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlBiosin fo

    the above key contains two values as below

    "InfName"="biosinfo.inf"
    "SystemBiosDate"="01/29/00"

    we want to export "infName" alone.

    Any tool which can export like this.
    Thanx

    For what purpose and under what conditions?
    Do either RegistryTool or CodeGuru give you what you want?

    Re: export registry value alone!!!

    Hi Lief,

    Thanx for the replay,

    We keep updating many security related registry values regularly sent by our network security division. we want to send these entries to users who should not be bothered about updating in registry. so we are trying to automate this using a tool which can export registry including required registry values as eg.. specified before.

    it would be nice if the tool is free

    thanx

    Hi
    Sorry if I've misunderstood your requirement, but if you need to send Registry patches to clients, could you not set up a text file with the required Keys and values etc. and give it the extender .reg. The option to Merge on the RClick menu will then modify the Registry accordingly.

    Re: export registry value alone!!!

    Open Registry Editor (regedit), highlight the value you want to export, and from File menu choose Export. Provide the filename and destination for resulting .reg file when prompted.

    Take a note that all executable files such as .reg or .vbs or .js are routinely rejected by most email clients (Outlook, Notes) so the best way to update all client workstations is to use remote management utility as PCAnywhere.

    Re: export registry value alone!!!

    Hi all,

    When Registry editor is used it exports all values under a key. We need to only export a perticular value under any key. Below example explains the requirement.

    there are two values under below mentioned key

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlBiosin fo

    ie.,

    "InfName"="biosinfo.inf"
    "SystemBiosDate"="01/29/00"

    we want to export "infName" alone.

    But when Regedit is used it export, all values under any specified key will get exported.

    hope i am clear now.
    Let us know for any such tool
    bye

    Re: export registry value alone!!!

    Do you really want to export it, or just read it? If the latter, try VBScript. For example:

    <pre>Sub OfcScanUpdate
    Dim oShell, sValue
    Set oShell = Wscript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") 'Instantiate Windows Shell object
    On Error Resume Next 'Must do inline error checking
    sValue = oShell.RegRead("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" & _
    "SOFTWAREVendorProductNT" & _
    "CurrentVersionServer") 'Try to retrieve server name on NT
    If Err.Number = 0 Then 'ProductNT is installed
    If UCase(sValue) = "MYBOX" Then 'It's ours; drop a marker file
    RunSecondProcedure
    Exit Sub
    Else 'Not ours
    Exit Sub
    End If
    Else 'Key not found, reset err object
    Err.Clear
    End If

    sValue = oShell.RegRead("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" & _
    "SOFTWAREVendorProductOld" & _
    "CurrentVersionServer") 'Try to retrieve server name on 9x
    If Err.Number = 0 Then 'ProductOld is installed
    If UCase(sValue) = "MYBOX" Then 'It's ours; drop a marker file
    RunSecondProcedure
    Exit Sub
    Else 'Not ours
    Exit Sub
    End If
    End If
    End Sub</pre>

    (Note: your VBS file needs to call the defined procedure outside of the Sub...End Sub structure.)

    For an example of how to write to the registry using VBScript, see <!post=Post #121209,121209>Post #121209<!/post>.

    Re: export registry value alone!!!

    Hi all,

    It would be nice if there is a option to export required registry values.(reason we dont have to format the reg file).
    We are in process of exploring the options of using script but does this mean there is no tool which this could be achieved.

    Thanx again

    Re: export registry value alone!!!

    ..by 'format' do you mean 'edit'? You could, easily, export the whole key, then edit to remove the values you don't want to change. As a .reg file is merged to the Registry, it doesn't alter things you don't want changing.

    Re: export registry value alone!!!

    Hi Merc,

    Our intention was to avoid editing *.reg files becoz of number of registry entries we update are high. Becoz of high number of registry entries we need to keep on deleting so many other entries for each entry required.
    The whole process of us asking a utility was to avoid editing *.reg files.

    hope that clarifies our requirements
    Thanx

    yup. I see now. Comment : I'm a little concerned that you would need to change the Registry at such frequent intervals. However, Ill keep an eye out for an app that will do your job.

    Hi Merc,
    Thanx for the replay,

    We frequently dont change the registry, I only mentioned that we have large number of entries when we change. Its not very frequently done.

    Hope to find a tool which can do this.
    Thanx

    For more guidance on scripts, see this "featured" Microsoft page: Welcome to the TechNet Script Center. The examples show that there is a lot hidden away in system objects that you can access with VBScript.
