Repagination When Using the Format Painter (Word 2002/XP)

Ahh, Word. I've noticed a quirk when using the Format Painter toolbar icon. Specifically, if you double-click on the Format Painter and then apply the formatting to another word in the document, Word feels that it needs to repaginate after each application of the format. That would be swell if this weren't a large document with an excess of 50 pages.

Strangely enough, though, if you open up the Styles and Formatting task pane, select the text, and apply the style....no repagination. This method takes a bit longer and I am not particularly fond of the rodent when I use the PC anyway.

Anyone know why Word wants to repaginate in this situation? Other information that may help includes: a dynamic table of contents, and change-tracking enabled in the document. I'm looking, really, for an easy way to take a paragraph (or word) style and apply it to multiple selections at the same time.

TIA!

Hi Mark:
I don't have an answer for you as I haven't used 2002, but can you avoid repaginating by using the keyboard shortcuts--
Ctrl+Shift+C to copy (same as double clicking format painter)
Ctrl+Shift+V to paste?

I've been meaning to test this and see if the same thing happens, but wouldn't you know that around the time you posted the reply the desktop PC that was using to do my editing at the office went south.

However, I didn't want you to think I didn't appreciate the reply! I will have to see if this is the workaround for an idiotic annoyance in the market-share leading document editor....

Worked like a charm....thanks Phil! I need to brush up on my keystrokes in Word. On the soapbox, you have to wonder why the format painter tool has to go and repaginate and the keyboard shortcut doesn't. Stupid, annoying and aggravating all at the same time!

Re: Repagination When Using the Format Painter (Word 2002/XP)

Well Phil, after a bit more working on the document that I appear to now own, it has become painfully clear that Word would like to repaginate the entire document every time I paste a style. Oddly, if I leave the Styles and Formatting task pane open, select the text, and click on the style I want to apply - no repagination. But don't you dare use the undo - repagination kicks off again.

Arrrrrgh. I'd rather manually repaginate once in a while than wait for Word to do it every time!

Hi Mark:
Assuming you're working in Normal Layout (MS has a penchant for "normal"), can you untick the box Tools/Options/General/Background repagination? That used to work.

I thought I remembered that option. Really, I just wanted to see if you were on your toes.

I'm using Page Layout view - can't seem to deal with it any other way. If memory serves it works the same in both views.

Thanks, Phil! Wanna proof-read for me too?

In Page Layout or Print Layout whatever they're calling it now), Word repaginates whenever you make any significant change, to display it by pages. In normal view, which takes less resources, it doesn't repaginate as often, unless you have background repagination ticked. Especially in a long document, or one with long tables, the display is better in normal view.

Sure. Bet I can make lots of mistakes.
