    WinXP- cannot connect

Sorry people if this is a basic problem which I just can't see.

I have just bought a network card, cables and hub, trying to connect a Win XP desktop with a Win98 laptop.

I've followed the Win XP setup wizard instructions- including the instructions to create a floppy for the notebook (Win98). I've run the floppy program on the notebook.

But my XP cannot see the notebook at all.

I've connected the hub, cables, laptop and a notebook together with the hub. The laptop and notebook recognise each other. But the desktop does not recognise either other computer.

If I disconnect a cable from the hub, the XP machine recognises that it has been disconnected, and gives a message. So presumably the Network card (Skymaser Ethernet Adapter, N791, complete with WinXP driver) is working a little. The green lights show on the hub when connected. But the XP cannnot recognise either other computer (regardless of file sharing), and neither other computer recognises the XP machine.

    What am I doing wrong?

Geoff, read <!post=this, 99050>this<!/post> thread, especially see Ian Leacy's instructions, (and possibly for amusement <!post=this thread,145212>this thread<!/post> about my recent woes and Dave's patient advice), you may find that you need to install NETBEUI on both ends to network W95 and W98 machines with XP machines.

(Why I have the audacity to post advice when my home network has been running properly for only three days is unfathomable.) <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    John,

I'd never heard of NETBEUI before, that may well be the clue. But I've misplaced a cable now, and soon off for the weekend. I'll have to wait until Tuesday to check it out.

    Thanks for your help
