Cannot empty deleted items folder (Outlook 2000)

There is a message in my Deleted items folder that Ican't get rid of. When I choose Tools, empty deleted items folder, Outlook generates an error message and freezes. How can I get rid of this problem? I there a way to get rid of that message through the back door?
    Thank you

    Hi Leif,
The error message is "Outlook has generated an error and will be shutdown by Windows".
My message is in the deleted items folder, I don't want to recover it, I just want to get rid of it.

Re: Cannot empty deleted items folder (Outlook 2000)

rename the current pst, open outlook and when it complains, let it create a new pst. File | open the renamed pst, delete the entire deleted folder.

Copy any new mail which might have arrived to the old pst. Close outlook. Delete the new pst, rename the old one back. open outlook, if it complains, point it to the old pst.

If the deleted folder is not recreated, close outlook and open it with the /resetfolders command line switch.
