    Explorer trick - find files

I've not known this before. It's very handy for me right now .....

I use Tools, Find, Files or Folders quite a bit, but have discovered that if I type just a part of a string, and abandon my DOS-habits of providing wild cards (such as "*" and "?") the search gives me better results.

I currently have 400+ documents, each document describing a VBA procedure. I'm working on "ClearGraphics" and wonder what other files might refer to a similar subject.

Entering a search string of "graph" and then a search string of "image" and then "pict" etc yields me results such as "GraphBeGone.doc" and "removegraphic" etc.

I'm finding it hard to describe the results, but I seem to be much better off NOT using the wildcard characters.

Re: Explorer trick - find files

    Hi Chris:
So far as I know, entering
    graph
& searching is equivalent to entering
    *graph*
whereas removing one of those astericks should give fewer results. By the way, pressing F3 (or even Ctrl+F, if you're in an Explorer window) brings up the dialog box a lot faster than Tools/Find/Files or Folders.

    Cheers,

You're right, you're right, you're right (on all 3 suggestions!)

I suspect that in the past I've been searching "graph*" or "*graph", rather than "*graph*".

By typing "graph" I've defaulted to the most global option. Hence my delight.

OK. I saved two keystrokes, and shifted ones at that, too.

    Your F3 tip is handy.

I often work from within Explorer in a specific project folder.

Other stupid Windows tricks: You can also get to the Find box by holding the "Windows" key (between Ctrl and ALT) and pressing "F".
