Compaq Upgrade to XP (XP Home)

A friend has a Presario 5000 with WIN ME. He would like to upgrade to XP. Should he contact Compaq for a copy of XP with the related drivers and software for his system? Or just buy a copy of XP from a store?

Re: Compaq Upgrade to XP (XP Home)

Were it me I would buy a copy in the store, free and clear, so that I had the full package. Compaq may offer OEM versions, but all of their drivers can be downloaded from their website.

Before your friend takes the plunge, you should make sure that the system is compatible with XP. Compaq does have some information about XP compatibility on their site, but the best bet is to check the Hardware Compatibility List and make sure that all of the devices are supported. There is also a prep tool that you can download that will scan the system, but I don't have the link handy. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>
