    Drop-down Menus (WinXP Pro)

I have recently had a minor but annoying problem develop and am wondering if others have seen this and perhaps have a solution.

Lately, the last 3 weeks or so, my XP system has had trouble with drop down menus. Normally, one would click on the down arrow, the menu opens up and then you move the cursor to the choice and click on it. On my system. the menu will not stay open. In some cases, holding the left mouse button down and dragging to the menu choice will work. In some cases the top choice must be highlighted and then the arrow keys used to move to the menu choice; the mouse not being able to keep the menu open.

All programs manifest this problem, some worse than others. QuickBooks 2002 is the worst. The same behavior even occurs with the "Start" menu, clicking "Start" and moving the cursor to "Run" for instance, the menu will close before the cursor gets there.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. By the way, the 'mouse' in this case is the Microsoft Expert Optical Trackball.

    Thanks a lot.

    Sincerely,

    Hi Bob

    START :
    1. Do you get the same effect with every type of mouse?
NO : Change the mouse to one that works. END
    YES : > 2

    2. Do a complete Virus Scan. Was an infection identified?
    NO : > 4
YES : Remove it using the recommended procedure.

    3. Has the effect gone away?
    NO : >4
    YES : END

    4. Re-install your OS over the top of the present one. Did this clear the problem?
    NO : > 5
    YES : END

    5. Do a clean re-install. Did this do the trick?
    NO : >6
    YES : END

    6. Come back here for further suggestions.
    END

    Re: Drop-down Menus (WinXP Pro)

Thanks for the logical sequence. I really appreciate it! Just to reply:
The issue seems to happen only when I'm logged in as myself. If I log on as Administrator, for instance, there is no problem. I have to assume that some software or driver that's loaded on my account is conflicting. At first I thought it might be the new TweekUI, but removing that didn't help. I had this problem once before. When another issue came up that required me to do a fresh install, the problem disappeared. There's a lot on this PC, so it's got to get a whole worse before I want to try that !! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Viruses are up to date and scanned daily. (Norton Anti Virus 2002) I haven't tried reinstalling over the top of the OS, but I guess I could try that. I may try removing or disabling smaller utilities. One of them is probably the culpret.

What we need here is a software package that will track drivers and see if there are conflicts somewhere. The old resource kits did that, didn't they?

By the way, Mel. I see that you're a Chemistry teacher.....

I'm a biochemist in California working as a private consultant in the field of Environmental Toxicology. I formally operated an environmental laboratory here in Northern California where we did a lot of work on matters pertaining to toxicology. I also taught some chemistry at Santa Rosa Junior College (Santa Rosa, California) and the Univerisity of California, Davis campus.....years ago!

This all has nothing to do with PC's, but I always respond to one in the same field.
