Removing AIM from startup permanently (Windows XP)

Can anyone tell me how to remove AOL Instant Messenter permanently from starting up every time I reboot? I have tried everything. I go into Start|Runmsconfig and uncheck all the boxes, and every time I reboot, it boots up again in start up.

Most references I can find refer to removing AIM with respect to using Netscape, and none refer to XP.
However, you may find some clues here:

Back before the days of XP, when I used to be lazy (Ha!) I would rename the file AIM.EXE to something else and at least prevent it from executing.

As it is now, AIM is not bothering me on my Win XP Pro and I don't remember if I did anything or not.

Thanks Leif. When I went to one of the links you gave me, I realized that I forgot to go into AIM Preferences and tell it not to start up. Thanks for the info. Now it does not appear on the task bar when I boot up.
