    Printer sharing

I have a desktop and a laptop. The newer laptop has USB, the desktop doesn't.

If I were to buy a printer with a USB and a parallel port, could I share it without a switch box by connecting the laptop via USB and the desktop via Parallel?

Have you actually found a printer with BOTH USB and Parrallel ports? <img src=/S/starstruck.gif border=0 alt=starstruck width=15 height=15>

    Re: Printer sharing

My printer now has both. Theoretically you should be able to connect the printer to both by using the different cables. I don't see any reason why not. the only problem you may run into is if you try printing from both. then again the printer will recognize it as two different print jobs so it should be ok. So I think you should be able to.

What printer would that be and what was the price (not that it really matters - the contrtoller of the purse strings has already said <big>Not any time soon!</big>)

I have an HP Deskjet 842. I believe most HP printers has both parallel and USB now. I think it is becoming a standard.

    Re: Printer sharing

I was thinking of the HP-940. Nothing very swish, as I only need to print basic coloured text for the moment.

I think it may do it, but if anyone has the ability to test this theory (not necessarily on an HP-940), could you let me (us) know?

    Many thanks.

I may be able to try out the theory. I'll just need to borrow my friends lap top to test it. I'll let you know if it works.

    Re: Printer sharing

    Some of the printers are coming with USB only, so when buying look for the connection type(s) <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/devil.gif border=0 alt=devil width=15 height=15>

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Printer sharing

    For anyone interested,

Following a quick (20 mins in the queue) call to Epson regarding their C60 which is also dual interface, the official word is YES two machines into one printer can go. I have been advised to perform the setup on each machine without the other's cable connected, just to be on the safe side.

    Thanks for your responses.

    Re: Printer sharing

For those who may be interested <img src=/S/duck.gif border=0 alt=duck width=23 height=23> I also have my Epson connected to my two PCs. One desktop G4 connected via USB and a Lombard PowerBook via serial. I setup each without the other cable connected (as suggested above) and have had NO problems with this, even when printing from both Macs at (aprox) the same time.
