    Library in Access (A2K)

Ok, I am developing this library and I'm working on my table design here is what I have thus far.

Table:Publising - Holds all the relevant information regarding the publishing( Title, Author, Year, etc)
Table:Categories - Holds all the different categories the publishings can fall under.
Table:RecManage - Holds the records management requirements information.
Table:Restrictions - Holds the restriction types (Confidential, Sensitive, None)
Table:Type - Holds the type of media the file is. (Audio, Video, Document, etc.)

Now I'm curious if this is a good way to split up my tables if I need to be able to query by just about anything contained in the record, depending on who is accessing it. Let me know if you have an questions, comments, or suggestions. It would be greatly appreciated. <img src=/S/yadda.gif border=0 alt=yadda width=15 height=15>

I'm assuming that the Publishing table is the Parent table, and that each of the other tables is on the "many" side of a one-to-many relationship with the Publishing table? I noticed that author was a field in Publishing table. So, there can only be 1 author for a publishing?

Correct the Publishing table is the parent table. For the things that we are logging, yes there is only one author.

    Hi Night

If your new to Access, ther is a db wiz that creates Book, CD Collections systems, sometimes cycling through these demos give you table setup ideas and look and feel you may want to incorporate in a new system.

Another suggestion would be Smart Access by Pinnical

Dec 2001 User Interface Standards for Maintenance Forms - Dennis Schumaker
Mar 2002 User Interface Standards for Reports - Dennis Schumaker

This is based on a CD collection system and has lots of techniques.

I would strongly suggest that you NOT assume that, even if you think it's true. Providing in advance for multiple authors, even if you don't need it now, can make you a hero when they decide they really *do* need multiple authors and you can say, "Multiple authors? No problem. Here you go"!
