Hotmail / POP mail (All)

Well here is a new one from MSN. I have just had an email from them to say that they will no longer offer retrieval of POP mail to customers of the basic free service. If I want to be able to retrieve POP mail via my Hotmail account after July 16, I have to sign up to the paid service!

I've had my hotmail account for over seven years, dating back to before Microsoft took it over. I'm thinking seriously about closing it out, in light of this, and the seemingly endless SPAM I seem to get on a daily basis...

That said, for what it's worth, I feel your pain..

My sentiments exactly. FYI, I followed their directions to close the account (intending to open a new one, making sure I opted out). I've been unable to close it. So I'm just going to ignore it for 90 days & let it lapse.

    Cheers,

I was wondering when they (MSN) would get around to doing this. Yahoo! did the same thing in April. No way am I paying them for the right to retrieve my mail via POP, especially when I can get it with my ISP for free. Wanted to avoid the hassle of changing e-mail addresses, but it seemed worth it to me. Lots less spam, too.

July 16 th MS will be turning this OFF on the accounts. If you still want to use Outlook 2002 or Outlook Express you will have to sign up for their paid srevices before the 16th of July.

By the way, several people that I know had MS information emails blocked and dumped into the trash so they have NOT been getting all of the needed news.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Dave, I think you are wrong about this. I took another look at the message Hotmail sent, and my interpretation is that you will no longer be able to access other POP accounts via hotmail. You will still be able to use Outlook 2002 or OE to access hotmail. That's my read, anyway. This is how their text reads:

We are sorry to inform you that as of July 16, 2002, we will no longer be able to offer POP Mail Retrieval to our Hotmail users with a standard free account. This means that you will not be able to aggregate e-mail from various accounts into a single Hotmail account.
