Trying to change the loaded version of Word... (Word XP & Word 97 SR 2 )

I can't fit my question in the space available for the subject!

I originally had Office 97 SBE loaded on this Windows 98 SE PC. Then I installed Word 2002/XP from Works Suite 2002, telling the installer to keep the previous version also.

Now, when I click on a .DOC file or a .RTF file in Windows Explorer, Word 2002 loads and runs that document. Fine.

But the only reason I wanted Word 2002 was to get many more available font colours, and so what I actually want to happen is that, when I click on a .DOC or a .RTF file displayed in Windows Explorer, I want Word 97 to load! [If I actually want to use Word 2002, I will load Word 2002, then load the document into it, rather than go via Windows Explorer.]

Dead easy, you may say, just change the Association for Microsoft Word Documents and Rich Text Format files by clicking on View => Folder Options => File Types in Windows Explorer, and edit the properties so that the paths for loading Word are changed from "Office10" to "Office". And while you're at it, change the icon back to the Word 97 version.

Did that. It still loaded Word 2002 when I clicked on a .DOC or a .RTF file in Windows Explorer. And it has gone downhill from there, saying that Word 2002 is corrupt, and has to be reinstalled. Clearly what seems to be a large number of Registry entires probably need to be changed also.

Although I realise it might be very much a minority requirement:
a) to have both versions of Word available on the same computer and
to have the older version loaded when clicking on a .DOC or a .RTF file
I wonder whether anyone can tell me how to get this to work reliably? [I'd prefer not to have to reinstall Office 97, though...]

Many thanks!

Hi John:
I'll start by saying that this is a guess & that someone else may have a better answer. With Word 97 & 2000, every time you ran 2000, it would reassociate .doc, etc. with Word 2000. That's because it has an automatic repair feature. Assuming that Word 2002 has that feature, that means that you can not do what you want.

What might be possible is to define a new extension (say .wdc) to Word 97 & change all your .doc files to .wdc. You would have to go into File Associations to create this. Then double clicking them would open in Word 97. You could also put an "Open with Word 2002" command on a context menu, so that you could right click a file & open it with Word 2002.

Hopefully, Word 2002 won't take over the new extension. The one disadvantage to this method would be that Word would still try to put a .doc extension on all new files by default. To actually create & save NewDoc.wdc, you'd have to type the file name in quotes in the FileSave box when naming the file. This gets to be a hassle.

If you're interested in going this route & need help with assigning the extension or creating the command on the context menu, post back.

Cheers,

Phil, I think your "guess" is correct, for some time after I'd posted my message the MSI Installer cut in and "repaired" all the paths from 'Office' to 'Office10', and changed the icon for Word to the dark blue 2002 version.

Since clearly Microsoft does not want me to use such an ancient piece of software as Word 97 any more, I think I had better accept defeat, albeit not gracefully. I'll have to open Word 97 then load the .DOC or .RTF file rather than just clicking on the line in Windows Explorer. So an "ease of use" feature actually makes it more difficult to do what I want to do. Ho-hum.

Thanks again for your insightful comments!

John

You might put a shortcut to the Word 97 executable in your "Send To" menu. Then you can open a document with Word 97 by right clicking it in Explorer, selecting Send To and then Word 97.

On my computer, the shortcut is in C:WinNTProfilesMyUserNameSendTo. Replace MyUserName by the name you use to access the computer. Depending on your Windows version, you may have to replace WinNT by Windows.

Hans - I'll try your idea when I get back to the offending Windows 98 SE PC this weekend - thanks! John

You can also add Open in Word 97 as an action in the File Types dialog. Then you don't have to click on the Send To fly-out before opening the document. I suppose Word 2002 might possibly try to override the addition, but that would be very bad design.
