Truncated table of contents (Word 2K on Win 98)

I've got a possessed table of contents... Most entries are correct but several randomly decide to only show the first letter of the entry.

    What I get now:
    Article title 1.......1
    Article title 2 .......5
    A...........................7
    Article title 4.......11

    What I want:
    Article title 1.......1
    Article title 2 ......5
    Article title 3.......7
    Article title 4.......11

I've gone thru my document several times and I can find no differences between the correct entries and the truncated ones. (The exact same style and formatting applied to all, no correlation between length of entry and whether or not it's truncated, etc.) The table of contents is placed at the beginning of the document and is separated from the main portion of the document with a next page section break. There is only one level to the TOC (Header 1 in the main document generates the TOC entries.)

Does anyone have any idea how to exorcise my TOC? I'm stumped.... <img src=/S/surrender.gif border=0 alt=surrender width=31 height=23>

    Hi Tekvet:

I take it that you've already checked to see if your headings have any direct formatting (having some of it formatted as hidden could cause this)?

Make sure that your TOC is created from template (when you go to Insert/Index & Tables/TOC tab).

Do you have numbering as part of the TOC style? If so, make sure that it was defined by going through Format/Style/Heading1/Modify/Format/Numbering & choosing the outline numbering style, rather than attaching the numbering by going through Bullets & Numbering directly.

Make sure that under Tools/Templates & add-ins that you don't have Automatically update document styles ticked.

If none of those give you any clue, copy all your text (without the TOC, section break, & most importantly, without the last paragraph mark) to a blank document & recreate the TOC.

If none of that helps, is the document too big to zip & upload here?

I think I figured out what I was doing wrong -- I had index fields in the same paragraphs as the titles (the Heading 1 stuff.) Looks like the fields were the hidden text that was mucking up the TOC. I'll just cut'n'paste those fields down to the next paragraph and go from there.

If that doesn't work, I'll trim out a smaller chunk of the whole file and upload that.

    Thanks! <img src=/S/joy.gif border=0 alt=joy width=23 height=23>
