Books on VBA and Functions (Win ME; Office XP)

Several days ago I posted a question about using functions to perform a solution that I had only been able to resolve with nested IF's. Thanks to Andrew Cronnolly, I learned something. However, I don't understand why his solution worked. After reading the XP HELP and referring to Woody's XP book, I find that I want to know more about how functions work and more about VBA than either the book or the HELP provide. Can someone suggest decent reference materials that will address these subjects?

All suggestions greatly appreciated and gratefully accepted.
