Access locking out other users on the network

We use a customized Access program for our business. We have 6 computers on a peer to peer network environment. In the morning (I'm usally the first one here), I open up the program and all works fine. However, when another person tries to open the program from their computer, a message comes on their screen that says something like: "program is locked for editing by 'sys adm' Rick" (I'm Rick). I then exit the program and everyone can get in it. If someone else is in first, i.e. "Bill", the it states that "Bill's" computer has it locked for editing. After this morning ritual, all seems to work fine the rest of the day, with people going into and out of the program at will. On a rare occasion, this happens during the day.

    Any Ideas?

    Rick

Check out the options available by going to TOOLS/OPTIONS/ADVANCED and selecting the record-locking strategy that is suited to your environment. You might try NO LOCKS or EDITED RECORD; BE CAREFUL. You will have to adjust each machine. Examine the ODBC settings as well.
I went through this and found that making an entry for for new data which is "blank", i.e. set for data entry in the design properties, works best because the set of records is not loaded into the form when opened.
    Hope this Helps.

    PrestonK,
Thanks for the reply. I checked the settings and they are all on "no locks". However I did see a box checked that said "open database using record-level locking". Do you know what would happen if that was unchecked? What would be a disadvantage to unchecking that box?

    Thanks,
    Rick

I'd leave it checked, based on a right-click to get more info. This locks only one record at a time.

Re: Access locking out other users on the network

If the first user does something which Access interprets as a design change, the database is then locked for editing and no-one can get in. I think the first user may change a date which is treated as a design element.

The best answer to this is to split the database. You then havea front end with the code, forms, etc on each workstation pointing to a back end with the tables which is in a common location. That way any user can make permitted design changes (which can be as simple as applying bold to a control) without affecting other users.

Two things to check, since you mentioned it's a customized app.

Is there any code in the program causing the locking?

Is anyone opening up the database Exclusive by accident?

How would one open the data base Exclusively?

In the Open dialog there is a check box on the right side under the buttons for Exclusive.

Click on File|Open or Control+O to get the Open dialog.

    There's also:

    Tools | Options | Advanced
Look for the "Default Open Mode" and check if it is set to Exclusive on someone's system.

    FWIW
