Pasting Excel graphics (Office 2000 SR-2)

Today PC help updated my Office 2000 with SR-2 (?service pack 2). Now when I copy an Excel graphic (on its own worksheet) and Paste Special|Picture into Word or PowerPoint the graphic is very oversized and truncated on the right side. Sometimes when I copy the graphic in Excel I get an error message that the graphic is too big and will be truncated, sometimes no message but it does it anyway. Sometimes it turns on the View|Size with Window and won't let me click it off.

A simple copy and paste works, but pastes the Excel chart as an Object... something I cannot do because my Word chapter contains many graphics and would soon balloon to be a huge file.

This was done on my co-worker's machine and hers functions as before... an Excel copy and Paste Special|Picture results in a reasonably sized, non-truncated picture in Word.

What's up? How can I fix this?? I am miserable

TIA,
Georgette

In Word, an object is really a field (press Alt+F9 to see what I mean), so you should be able to right-click and Unlink it from the original, converting it into a picture. If that menu option isn't available, the keyboard equivalent is to select it and press Ctrl+Shift+F9. This might even be faster than Paste Special. But if it blows up the same way, we'll have to find a Plan C.

Many thanks... I will refer your advice to folks at work as I am out today helping my daughter move.

When it is pasted as an object, it is not a "linked" object, but just an object (with all the ability to open up the graphic in Excel while in Word, but not opening up the original source file).

So if we cannot "unlink" the graphic, what is Plan C??

Many thanks,
Georgette

Mmmm, I wouldn't interpret the term Unlink too literally. Say you do a select all on a graphic in Paint and then paste it into Word. It isn't linked to anything, but it is an embedded object and can be unlinked and converted into a plain picture. So I think it should work in this case, too. As for Plan C, I'm hoping someone else knows what that would be.

Selecting the graphic and doing CTRL-SHIFT-F9 changes the embedded object to a picture at home (Windows XP and Office 2000 SR-1). Hopefully it will work at work with Windows 2000 and Office 2000 SR-2).

Thanks for your thoughtful solution,
Georgette

Re: Pasting Excel graphics (Office 2000 SR-2)

FOLLOW UP.... The problem of truncation, error message, etc. seems to stem from the settings for the resolution of my monitor (a 21" one) and # of colors selected.

In order to see clearly 2 pages in Word at the same time, my Display Properties|Settings = 1600 by 1200 pixels, 256 colors (only option I can choose with this screen area) and refresh frequency of 70 Hertz. If I reduce the pixels, cut and paste functions correctly but I cannot see the 2 pages in Word clearly.

So I am doing the simple copy and paste, then choosing the graphic and doing CTRL-SHIFT-F9 to change the graphic object to a picture. Thanks for the work around tip!

I have also requested a new video card... hopefully that will help.
