    W32.Idim virus update (XP)

Thought I`d better make a new post since it is so long since my last. This is mainly for Sparky as he asked to know what happened about this virus which infected 20 of my WINDOWS system exe files. Well.. I couldn`t track them down on the Web and resorted to contacting Symantec tech support. After 3 or 4 Emails back and forth they now tell me that this is a relatively new virus which cannot be repaired and advise me to delete the files from quarantine and therefore from my system. I`m not sure about this and so I think I will hang on to them for a while longer just in case. I have taken note of them so that if I do delete them and need them later, at least I will have a record of their names. Must say I was disappointed in Symantec. I had 3 conflicting messages before this one to delete. Anyway that is the story. Thanks to Sparky and all other helpers.

Not to open a can of worms, but I've had similar experience with Symantec support on a slightly different issue. I had a reproduceable, bona-fide bug and they swore that it wasn't an issue with their software. Hmmm. I had even provided them with the solution but the official statement was that it had never happened anywhere else, therefore it must have been something I was doing, or something unique to me.

    Bah.

Hang on to the files for audit purposes. I presume that your system is now operating normally again....at least, I hope so. Just wanted to let you know that you're not alone in the fight against corporate tyranny!! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    Elaine,

Could you please tell me what the title of your original post was so I can find and read it? I searched for it using your name and "W32.Idim virus" but came up empty.

    Thanks.

Many thanks to WyllyWylly and hlewton for replies. To WyllyWylly...Yes my system is running fine as far as I can tell, but I wish I knew what all the removed files are since they are no longer in the system. I will hang on to them for a while.
To hlewton. My first post was weeks ago and can`t even find it myself. Here are the facts in a nutshell so as not to be too long. NAV alerted me to W32Idim in Kazaa file. System scan removed 20 files all "exe" fromC:WINDOWSsystem. Examples of names for you are ditrace.exe , digiview.exe , igfxtray.exe
Used "Search" and none found except for one of them but it was in Upper Case, while all, but one, of the corrupted files are in Lower case. I haven`t a clue what the files are and a Web search (including Symantec site)found no trace of them.System is now otherwise clear, but the files are still in quarantine, and NAV says they cannot be repaired. Submitted one to Symantec and received 3 conflicting replies.Have uninstalled Kazaa .The rest you know.I am a beginner and am really lost with this one. Can`t understand how my system seems to be OK with as many as 20 "exe" files removed. I am running XP Home on a laptop.I hope this is all the info as I`ve had to do this from memory.Perhaps all I can do is to wait and see? Many thanks again for your help. Elaine.

    Elaine,

Thank you. I was just curious about your post because I have used and trusted NAV for many years. I even switched my work computers to it when the corporate policy was saying to use another brand.

My interest in your post was to find out if Symantec was becoming less reliable. The only problem I have ever had with them was getting some tech support for a problem unrelated to the anti virus program. That was a headache. I guess I could complain about them more than doubling their annual subscription price but I still feel much better with that protection. I also like the fact that they seem to come out with as many updates as necessary to try to keep us safe. They don

    hlewton,
Thanks for the reply and the advice about GoBack.I don`t really mean to complain about NAV. After all it did alert me quickly to the virus and maybe another product might not have been so up to date. The damage to the files is irreparable, so there is no blame there either. I suppose I am just angry that such things as malicious viruses exist and that I am a victim.I am not going to change from NAV. Instead I will try to be more careful and avoid sites like Kazaa which is P2P file sharing.Keep up the good work helping beginners like me who need all the help they can get. Thanks again and best wishes from Scotland
    Elaine.
