    boot failure

Windows will come up with the mouse cursor in SafeMode. A normal start will put up the desktop but no mouse. Did Anti-virus, checkdisk, and a couple of reinstalls to no avail. How can W98se support the mouse in Safe Mode and be mouse-dead in Normal startup? I'm three days into this thing and <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>. Any help out there?

In the safe mode ALL drivers and devices are NOT installed. It appears that you have a two devices trying to use the same IRQ or com setting.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: boot failure

Removed mouse from Device Manager while in Safe Mode. Machine still will not load a mouse in Normal startup. (Further the mouse is still missing from Device Manager but it is there and working in Safe Mode!)

Can I safely do a Selective Start eliminating System.ini, Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Windows.ini, etc.? If the order is important give me a hint of what to leave out first. Andy
