Jerky sounds at start-up

All of a sudden when my Win98 system boots, the start-up sound is very jerky. If I go into the sounds folder and replay it, it's fine. I've run anti-virus over and over again, and the system is clean. Why would it be a jerky sound at boot, yet the sound itself is ok (means the sound card should be ok, yes?)

    Re: Jerky sounds at start-up

I've seen this a few times and there seems to be no explanation for it other than a plain and simple (albeit harmless) bug. It plagues slower processors more frequently than the new mongo-fast multi-gigahertz toys that the chipmakers are putting out currently.

Things that can help are making sure that you have enough free RAM, the latest software drivers for your sound card, or if it bugs you that much a newer soundcard (Creative Live! cards can be found cheaply now that the Audigy is out).

Outside of those options, the only real good solution I have found is to reformat the computer and re-install Windows. Drastic over a startup sound - changing to a shorter sound (five seconds or so) will alleviate this without the need for burning down the forest to clear a single tree.

But, why would it happen all of a sudden? Has been fine for ages. I run 128 megs of RAM, most of which would be free upon boot-up.

Have you recently install software that starts automatically at start-up? I'm think along the lines of programs like Webshots, KaZaa, BearShare, RealPlayer, etc.

Too many things starting at once could be your problem .

I wish I could say "yes" but my msconfig start-up is at bare bones.

One other thing you might try is checking whether the DMA box is checked in the properties of your hard drive(s) and possibly your CD-ROM drive(s). There's lots of hard drive activity at boot-up, and slow performance of your hard drive might be affecting your sound playback.

    ALso, have you defragged lately?

I was experiencing very choppy video playback and mouse movement before I realized I'd neglected to check the DMA boxes on all my hard drives and CD-ROM drives.

    Hope this helps!
