    Defining Startup Appearance (5.5)

Short: IE always opens with fullscreen, history, links bar. I dislike these three options, but it never "remembers" I've turned them off. What's going on?

I'm going to go into a bit of history here because I don't know what's relevant.

For a long time, I was getting a "could not load xxxx.dll" error when I started; I clicked OK and continued. I eventually found the dll but it was a text file that I didn't recognize so I figured I was just as well off it didn't load. When I tried renaming the dll, IE wouldn't start at all, so I left it there.

Then my brother-in-law used my machine. (The brother-in-law who is currently somewhere in Africa, out of contact.) Since then the error message regarding the dll doesn't appear but IE starts with the options mentioned above. If I could reach my brother-in-law, I'd ask what he did. My changes are "remembered" but only for that login session (I'm on Windows NT 4.0SP5).

I've done desultory searches trying to figure out where IE looks for info on its configuration but haven't found anything. Can anybody help me figure out what I should remove/edit/change? It's not a huge deal rearranging the window every time I login and start up, but it is a pain.

A search of this forum didn't reveal anything, but maybe I didn't use the right terms. Can anybody help?

    John

To have these settings saved one MUST NOT use the "X" in the upper right corner, you need to use the menu, "File, Close" and your setting should be saved.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thanks for the suggestion. I thought I had tried that, but hey, I'm fallible. So I tried again last night.

Alas, that turns out not to be the problem. It is still not saving settings.

Any other ideas? Is it possible I have a file (somewhere) that contains these config instructions that
are read on login? There are no options in the shortcut on the desktop, and I would expect those to be invoked every time I start the browser, not just the first time after logging in.

I can empathize with you, because, at times, IE won't remember my new window or status bar settings. I'm not sure this will always work, but when you do a File/Close hold the Ctrl key down (maybe it was the shift key <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>.

    Hope this helps.
