    Taskbar won't auto-hide (5.1.2600 Hotfix Q320174)

I have set my Taskbar to auto-hide. But it has started not to auto-hide.

I can go to Taskbar Properties (right-click taskbar and select Properties), and un-tick Auto-hide, then click Apply, then tick Auto-hide, then click Apply, it Auto-hides initially. Then after a time it reverts to not Auto-hiding!

What's wrong and how do I correct it? Or is it a bug?

I hope someone can help - as it hides important info at the bottom of most program windows.

I have the exact same problem. Has anyone figured this out?

    Mike & CaptainKen,

Have you first UNLOCKED the taskbar, then set to Autohide. OK'd out, then reentered to lock the taskbar again?

    Today it is called golf!

I just started having this issue on an XP Pro SP2 installation. Am wondering if anyone has discovered a cause?

If you search the Lounge or the Internet you'll find many references to various issues with the Taskbar. The cause of any of these issues is usually unknown. Many people report that it just 'fixes itself' or 'goes away after a reboot'.

Yes a search does show this random behavior and no smoking gun which is why I posted the question in hopes that there was something new to report. Apparently this is still a weakness of XP.

The taskbar in Windows XP does some other funny things. I manage approximately 50 desktops and I have seen it all. I found a neat little program that will restore your taskbar to its original settings. Unfortunately, I have it at work, but I can make it available tomorrow morning EST for anyone that requires it.

At Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP there are several registry hacks for the taskbar. If you search the page (Ctrl-F) for taskbar or auto hide (two words) you'll find some fixes. If you've found something good to look at, it would be helpful if you post a link here also. Thanks!
